Job reference 2024-Energy-5
We're looking for an accomplished individual with a good honours degree and approximately 5 years of relevant professional experience to join our cross-disciplined team of professional engineers and management consultants as a specialist in climate action & sustainable energy.
Byrne Ó Cléirigh is at the forefront of energy and climate policy development and implementation. Governments and agencies rely on our deep expertise and proven strengths in analysis to develop and implement policies and strategies for tackling the energy and climate challenges facing society. We enable better decision-making by providing independent research and objective analysis. Clients in the private sector also draw on our expertise and capabilities to help them identify and leverage sustainable business practices as a source of business advantage.
This is a full-time position based at our offices in Dublin 2.
Job specification
This will be a varied role working on a range of challenging and stimulating consultancy assignments in the fields of renewable energy, climate action, environmental protection and sustainability. Examples of current and recent assignments include:
- Renewable transport – we manage the implementation of Ireland’s Renewable Fuel Transport Obligation, which is a key element in Ireland’s strategy to decarbonise the transport sector.
- Decarbonisation targets for Ireland – we are advising the Irish Government on approaches for setting emissions reduction and energy efficiency targets for the public sector, and on methodologies for quantifying emissions and tracking individual public bodies’ progress towards the targets.
- Online software platform for tracking emissions – we are advising on the development of a pioneering online software platform for reporting energy and emissions data.
- Modelling decarbonisation scenarios – we have developed several models for identifying and quantifying energy decarbonisation pathways incorporating different low-carbon technologies.
- Renewable transport – we evaluated the real-world environmental performance of seventeen alternative-fuel buses, including hybrids, electric buses, fuel cell hydrogen and compressed natural gas vehicles. Our work informed the Irish Government’s short-to-medium term procurement strategy for public bus fleets, as well as longer-term policy development in this area.
- Energy storage - we are advising several private sector clients with respect to the development of energy storage facilities (batteries, hydrogen, etc.).
- Sustainability criteria for bioenergy – we recently completed several assignments related to the development of a sustainability framework for biomass in Ireland.
- Development of policy interventions for climate action – we regularly advise Government on the development of policy measures to decarbonise Ireland’s energy system. We evaluate the costs, benefits and risks associated with different policy options. Recent assignments have focussed on building retrofit and solar PV.
- Greenhouse gas reporting – we advised an energy company on making a public disclosure on its energy and greenhouse gas emissions performance via the CDP (formerly the Carbon Disclosure Project).
- Energy security – we undertook a comprehensive evaluation of energy security, analysing key energy security issues for Ireland to 2030, including the implications of climate change, technological developments and Brexit.

- Work closely with experienced professional engineers to manage specific aspects of assignments, with growing responsibility for quality, budget and schedule.

- Follow a CPD plan on a pathway towards Chartered Engineer status.
- Assist with consultancy assignments in other fields, including risk management and environmental protection.
